Well Casing Extensions – Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my wellhead need to be above ground?
A buried wellhead – especially one sitting in an old stone pit – lets surface water, runoff, rodents, and insects reach your water supply. New York code requires the casing to terminate above grade with a sealed sanitary cap so contaminants can’t get in. Raising it also makes the well easy to find and service.
How high does the casing have to be?
New York generally requires the casing to extend at least 12 inches above the final ground surface, and higher in flood-prone areas. We raise yours to the proper Board of Health height – or higher if you prefer for easier access.
What is a well pit, and why eliminate it?
A well pit is an underground box or vault that older wells were built into. Pits flood, collect debris, and are a common reason wells fail a Board of Health test. We eliminate the pit, install a pitless adapter, and bring the wellhead up to grade so the system is sealed and code-compliant.
Do I need this to sell my home?
Often, yes. Many home sales in our area require the well to pass a Board of Health inspection, and a buried or pitted wellhead is a frequent fail. Handling the casing extension before you list keeps your closing on track.
What’s included in the job?
We dig out and expose the buried well, remove old seals and corroded fittings, install a pitless adapter, weld or clamp a new steel casing extension, raise the wellhead to proper height, install a new sanitary cap with a screened vent, and sanitize the well.
Will raising the well make future repairs easier?
Yes. A visible, above-ground wellhead makes everything down the road easier – electrical testing, locating well lines, pump and tank replacement, and well sanitizing. It’s a one-time upgrade that pays off every service call after.
