When you invite someone onto your property, you want to know who is coming to your home, and that they are trained, experienced, and properly qualified to work on your private water system.

How We Build Well-System Specialists
Below, meet the people who answer calls, drive our trucks, pull your pumps, and keep your water flowing across:
Putnam • Dutchess • Westchester • Rockland • Orange Counties
Not everyone begins as a well pump expert — but we train them to become one.
Our goal: Every helper becomes a certified technician within two years.

From there, we provide a structured, hands-on training pathway that includes:

This training structure is a major reason why our team is trusted far more than:
“When you call The Pump Man, you’re getting a trained
well-system specialist, not ”whoever was available.”
This builds a team or true specialists — not generalists — and gives each employee a lifetime skill in a stable, essential industry that isn’t changing any time soon.
Fourth-Generation Owner • Lead Technician • Entrepreneur and Visionary
NYS Licensed Well Pump Installer • DEC License Holder • Legacy Putnam County Journeyman
Born in 1974 and married to Jess Kappus, Paul represents the fourth generation of leadership in a family business that began in 1910. His career started at just 12 years old, working side-by-side with his father, Dave Kappus, on weekends and summer breaks. From those early years forward, Paul immersed himself in the hands-on craftsmanship, mechanical problem solving, and work ethic that built the Kappus name over a century ago.
From a young age, Paul demonstrated exceptional technical ability. At his high school graduation, he received the institution’s Award of High Achievement in Technology — an honor so rare that it had not been awarded to any student in the previous ten years. The faculty also inducted him into the Future Business Leaders of America, presenting him with a formal certificate despite his not being part of the FBLA club. The recognition was based solely on merit, leadership, and technological aptitude.
These early milestones foreshadowed the deep technical and leadership strengths that would shape Paul’s career.
Before specializing exclusively in well pump and water system service, Paul built a strong foundation in new construction plumbing, learning to install complete systems from the ground up:
This early work taught him how water systems are built, function, and fail — giving him a unique perspective that most technicians never gain.
From there, Paul became known as one of the region’s most talented plumbing repair specialists. He excelled at diagnosing and rebuilding systems that other tradespeople wouldn’t touch, often taking apart valves, pumps, faucets, boilers, and components with such precision that many contractors referred difficult repairs directly to him.
He developed a reputation for:
Paul believes true specialists are developed through mentorship, structure, and hands-on learning. Many of The Pump Man’s best technicians started as helpers with basic mechanical interest or vocational training. Through Paul’s structured training program, helpers are guided into becoming licensed well pump technicians within two years, learning pump retrieval, electrical diagnostics, pressure systems, hydraulics, and water chemistry along the way. Paul personally mentors each technician to ensure consistency, professionalism, and long-term skill development across the entire team.
Paul believes that every person in the company has a voice, no matter their position. The Pump Man operates as a team where communication, respect, and honesty guide every decision. As the owner, Paul believes employees come first — because when people feel valued and supported, they treat customers with that same level of respect and pride. This philosophy has shaped a family-oriented, team-driven culture that encourages growth, accountability, professional development, and genuine care for customers and one another. Beyond leadership, Paul brings a rare blend of craftsmanship, technical ability, engineering knowledge, and creative problem-solving that directly elevates the quality of work The Pump Man delivers. There is virtually nothing in a home, workshop, or job site that Paul cannot build, repair, fabricate, or improve. His hands-on skill set includes:
These skills were not learned as separate trades — they evolved naturally from Paul’s lifelong drive to understand how things work and how to make them better. Though he is highly skilled in plumbing, pumps, mechanical systems, and electrical diagnostics, Paul has never thought of himself primarily as a plumber or pump mechanic. Those abilities came naturally. He has always viewed himself first as:
This mindset is what drives him to continually refine operations, adopt new technologies, and explore emerging tools — including AI systems, digital workflows, and advanced communication platforms — to strengthen the business and improve the customer experience.
Outside of work, Paul enjoys performance powerboating, offshore big-game fishing, snowmobiling, mechanical restorations, custom automotive and marine fabrication, engine building, and traveling with his family and friends. He also spends time exploring new technologies and innovations that advance both the business and his personal craftsmanship.
As Paul stepped into ownership, he led the company through its greatest transformation in more than a century. Recognizing that homeowners needed water system specialists—not general plumbers or electricians— to service their water systems he began transitioning away from plumbing services and toward exclusive well pump and private water system expertise.
Adopting Modern Technology, AI, and Industry-Leading Marketing
Kappus Well Pump Repair & Water System Services — The Pump Man
This rebrand clarified the company’s identity, eliminated confusion with general plumbing companies, and aligned the business with its true expertise: private well systems.
His goal:
“To understand AI, marketing, and digital operations better than anyone in my circle — and use that knowledge to build the strongest water system service company operations platform in the region if not the nation.”
Paul is not only a mechanical expert — he is now one of the few well pump professionals in the country spearheading a full modernization using:
Paul is currently leading the build of the region’s most advanced and future-ready well pump service companies — built on 115 years of family history, deep specialization, modern systems, AI-powered operations, and a team of highly trained well system professionals.
His mission:
“Protect the customer. Protect the water system. Build a business strong enough for the fifth generation.”

Office Manager • Billing & Accounting Specialist • Co-Owner • Administrative Leadership
Jessica Kappus grew up in Peekskill, New York before relocating to Mahopac, where she attended Copper Beech Middle School and later Lakeland High School. It was there she met her future husband, Paul Kappus — a partnership that has now spanned more than 25 years of marriage, family, and business growth.
Jessica has played a critical and often behind-the-scenes leadership rolein the success of what is now Kappus Well Pump Repair & Water System Services — The Pump Man. Throughout the company’s evolution, she has been a steady force guiding:
Her organizational strength, attention to detail, and ability to keep the operational side of the business running smoothly have helped the company grow from a small family operation into one of the most respected well pump service providers in the region. Jessica is also an entrepreneur with a natural interest in business development and new ventures, bringing creativity, initiative, and a forward-thinking mindset to everything she pursues. Outside of work, Jessica enjoys crocheting, boating, fishing, crafting, and spending time with her dogs — who many customers hear in the background when they call the office. Her warmth, patience, and professionalism help set the tone for the family-oriented culture that defines The Pump Man today.
Lead Technician • Job Scheduling • Licensed NYS Well Pump Installer
After moving permanently to the United States at age ten, Jessica continued to work alongside family during summers and weekends, gaining early field experience in both plumbing and well system service. She graduated from Putnam Valley High School in 2014 and went on to study Business Administration at Westchester Community College — all while continuing to support the family business part-time.
At 23, Jessica ventured into entrepreneurship and opened her own pizzeria in LaGrangeville, NY. Although she excelled as a young business owner, her passion for technical work and helping homeowners with real water system problems ultimately brought her back to the trade.
Today, Jessica is one of our Lead Technicians and is proudly among the very few women in New York State to hold a DEC Well Pump Installer License — an accomplishment that reflects both her dedication and her skill. Customers often know her as “the other Jessica” (not to be confused with Paul’s wife, Jessica Kappus), and she is frequently the first person homeowners speak to when needing technical guidance, estimates, or system evaluations.
Jessica is highly praised across our Google reviews for her:
Her combination of mechanical skill, field experience, and customer communication makes her an irreplaceable member of The Pump Man team, as well as a role model for women entering the trades.

Field Technician Apprentice • Future Well Pump Technician
Albert McDonald is a lifelong Putnam Valley resident and one of the newest — and most promising — members of The Pump Man team. As the youngest of four siblings, Albert grew up learning the value of teamwork, resilience, and earning your place through hard work. These traits became immediately clear from the moment he walked into our shop. Albert graduated from Putnam Valley High School, where he played on the Putnam Valley football team and gained a reputation for his determination and strong work ethic. Straight out of high school, he joined The Pump Man in early spring with very little hands-on field experience — but what he lacked in background, he made up for instantly with drive, attentiveness, and a genuine willingness to learn. From day one, Albert stood out as:
Albert brings a great attitude, steady focus, and a fun, easygoing personality that contributes positively to the shop atmosphere. He fits right into the family culture here and is well on his way to becoming a future certified well pump technician. Outside of work, Albert enjoys dirt biking, riding and working on his Harley-Davidson, and spending time with friends and family. His energy, reliability, and eagerness to learn make him a valuable member of The Pump Man team — and someone we expect big things from in the years ahead.
Field Technician Apprentice • Future Well Pump Technician
Trysten was born in 1998 at Putnam Hospital and raised in Queens before moving back to Putnam Valley in 2014. He graduated from Putnam Valley High School in 2016 and has worked in several hands-on trades, including HVAC, electrical work, and carpentry. He even spent time as a line cook, developing strong multitasking skills and a solid work ethic. Despite growing up in the city, Trysten has fully embraced small-town life and is proud to call Putnam Valley home. Trysten joined The Pump Man as one of our newest helpers and quickly proved himself to be a natural fit. He is:
He brings a positive attitude to the field every day, and the entire team — both in the office and in the field — genuinely enjoys working with him. His sense of humor and willingness to help have made him a great addition to the company culture. Under our structured training program, Trysten is currently learning:
Given his talent, work ethic, and eagerness to learn, we fully expect Trysten to become a licensed well pump technician in the near future. Before joining the company, Trysten attended Westchester Community College to pursue radiology technology. Although life led him down a different path, he values the knowledge and friendships gained through that experience. Outside of work, he enjoys hiking, fishing, and relaxing with video games. He often jokes that he’s
“A jack of all trades, master of none – often better a master of one.”
We are extremely fortunate that Trysten came to us looking for work at exactly the right time. In an era when it’s increasingly difficult to find hardworking, mechanically minded individuals willing to learn a trade, Trysten has proven to be an exceptional addition — and a future leader within our team.
HR Department • Compaints Department

No visit to the office is complete without a warm (and loud) greeting from Skater and Hank — our beloved office dogs and unofficial morale managers. Skater oversees HR (and yes, no employee gets hired without his approval), while Hank proudly runs the Complaint Department… though he’s often asleep on the job.
They’ve been known to bark during phone calls, supervise lunch breaks, and monitor driveway traffic with impressive enthusiasm. And when tensions run high, Hank is shockingly effective at diffusing just about any situation — usually with a well-timed sigh or face flop. You’ll probably hear them in the background when you call — consider it part of the experience. They may not fix pumps, but they keep the rest of the crew in line.
