The original Kappus family crew, early 1900s.
Over 100 Years of Service. One Mission: Keep the Water Flowing.
The Kappus family has helped keep water flowing safely and reliably for homeowners across New York. What began in 1910 as one man’s trade has grown into The Pump Man — a fourth-generation, family-owned well pump company serving New York’s Hudson Valley.
Today, under the name Kappus Well Pump Repair & Water System Services,
we solely focus on:
How Our Family-Owned Well Pump Company Began (1910–1974)
Our family business was founded in 1910 by Charles Frederick Kappus Sr., a master plumber who installed early plumbing and water systems in the brownstones of New York City. As the region expanded north, the Kappus family followed. In 1974, the business moved to Putnam County to meet increasing demand in Putnam and Westchester counties. For decades, we worked closely with builders and homeowners, earning a reputation for quality, reliability, and honest workmanship.
A New Generation and the First Well Pump Puller (1961-1992)
When Charles Jr. passed away unexpectedly in 1961, the company was entrusted to his son, David Kappus, who was just 18 years old. Dave carried the family legacy forward and maintained a high standard of service throughout the region. In 1986, Dave purchased his first well pump puller, laying the foundation for a major new chapter. He began offering well pump service along with repair work. By 1992, the company had officially entered the well pump service business, and the name “The Pump Man” became a trusted fixture in the area.

Growth, Change & Water System Specialization (1998–2012)
As both the pump division and service work expanded, the company incorporated in 1998 as C.F. Kappus Pumps & Plumbing, with Dave and his son Paul Kappus leading the business together.
Over time, the company transitioned away from new construction projects and focused on pump repair and private well water systems.
The plumbing contracting division was eventually passed to Paul’s brother, David Kappus Jr., who now operates independently under CFK Plumbing — named in honor of their great-grandfather, Charles Frederick Kappus.
In 2012, Dave suffered a stroke that left him paralyzed. Paul took full responsibility for the company and used modern tools, including online marketing, to grow and stabilize the business. Within just a few years, the company more than doubled in size and maintained a trusted 5-star reputation for service.

Becoming Dedicated Water System Specialists (2020–2022)
By 2020, demand for well pump and water system service had grown significantly — to the point where plumbing repair work was no longer sustainable.
In 2022, the company made a major shift:
We discontinued plumbing repair services entirely to specialize 100% in well pumps and private water systems.
This allowed us to deliver the professionalism, speed, and expertise our customers depend on.
Today, water systems are all we do, and that focus has made us the region’s most trusted name for well pump emergencies and water system reliability.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long has the Kappus family been in business?
Since 1910. The business was founded by Charles Frederick Kappus Sr., a master plumber who installed early water systems in New York City. More than a century later, we’re now a fourth-generation, family-owned well pump and water system company.
When did the company become “The Pump Man”?
In 1986, David Kappus purchased the family’s first well pump puller, and by 1992 the company had officially entered the well pump service business — that’s when the name “The Pump Man” became a trusted fixture in the area.
Do you still do plumbing?
No. In 2022 we discontinued plumbing repair entirely to specialize 100% in well pumps and private water systems. The plumbing contracting division was passed to Paul’s brother, David Kappus Jr., who operates independently as CFK Plumbing. Today, water systems are all we do.
What does fourth-generation mean for me as a customer?
It means over a century of hands-on knowledge passed down through the family — and a reputation we’ve spent four generations protecting. When you call The Pump Man, you’re getting specialists who’ve built their name on quality, reliability, and honest workmanship since 1910.
What areas do you serve?
We serve homeowners across Putnam, Dutchess, Westchester, Rockland, and Orange Counties. If you’re not sure whether you’re in our service area, give us a call and we’ll let you know.
