Cleaner, Safer Water – Tailored to Your Home or Business

What Can a Specialty Water Filtration System Fix?

Not all water problems are the same – and not every home needs the same filtration system. At Kappus Well Pump & Water System Services, we offer a full range of customized water filtration solutions designed to fix the specific issues found in well water throughout Putnam, Dutchess, Westchester, and surrounding counties.

Some problems you can see, taste, or smell – iron stains, hard water, acidic pH, tannins, sulfur odor, or sediment. Others you can’t. Emerging contaminants like PFAS and PFOAS, along with bacteria, nitrates, lead, and VOCs, can be present without any warning signs and pose a real health and safety risk to your family.

That’s why we test first and never guess. We identify exactly what’s in your water, then tailor a system to your actual results – whether the goal is protecting your family’s drinking water or meeting the safety standards required for a public or commercial water supply. Expert-installed, professionally configured, and built to make your water genuinely safe.

Make Sure Your Water Is Safe for Your Whole Family.

We test for iron, hardness, bacteria, PFAS, and more, then build the right system to fix exactly what your water needs. Honest, upfront pricing every time.

We often see combinations of the following problems in local wells and customize a solution just for your needs:

  • Concerns about lead, nitrates, PFOS, VOC’s
    heavy metals & more
  • Harmfull Bacteria
  • Iron & manganese (rust stains, metallic taste)
  • Hard water (soap scum, dry skin, scale buildup)
  • Low pH (acidic water that eats copper pipes)
  • Tannins (yellowish water, organic discoloration)
  • Sulfur odor (rotten egg smell)
  • Sediment & cloudiness
  • Bad taste & odors just to name a few.

Our Most Common Filtration Solutions

Every well is different. Here are the systems we install most often across the Hudson Valley, and exactly what each one fixes – so you can see which matches your water.

Iron Filters (Air-Injection Oxidizers)

Best for: orange/brown staining, metallic taste, or rotten-egg smell.

Iron, manganese, and hydrogen sulfide are oxidized and filtered out with an air-injection system – no chemicals needed.

  • Removes iron, manganese, and hydrogen sulfide (sulfur gas)
  • Eliminates orange/brown staining in sinks, toilets, and laundry
  • No chemicals required – uses air injection and filter media
  • Clears up metallic taste and rotten-egg odor
  • Often ends the need for bottled water

Water Softeners (Ion Exchange Systems)

Best for: hard water – soap scum, scale buildup, dry skin and hair.

Salt-based softeners remove the calcium and magnesium that cause hard water.

  • Removes calcium and magnesium that cause hardness
  • Prevents scale buildup on appliances, plumbing, and fixtures
  • Softer water is gentler on skin, hair, and clothing
  • Increases soap and detergent efficiency
  • Extends the life of water heaters, dishwashers, and washing machines

pH Neutralizers

Best for: acidic water, blue-green stains, or pinhole leaks in copper pipe.

Raises low-pH (acidic) water to neutral, stopping corrosion in pipes and fixtures. A must-have for homes with copper plumbing.

  • Raises acidic water (low pH) to neutral, around 7.0
  • Prevents copper pipe corrosion and green/blue stains
  • Protects hot water heaters from internal damage
  • Improves taste and clarity
  • Often paired with iron or softening systems for full protection

Tannin Filters (Anion Exchange)

Best for: yellow or tea-colored water, common near lakes, rivers, and wetlands.

Clears yellow, tea-colored water caused by organic material like decomposing leaves.

  • Removes yellow discoloration from organic materials
  • Ideal for wells near lakes, rivers, swamps, or wetlands
  • Uses anion exchange media designed to trap tannins
  • Prevents staining on laundry and plumbing fixtures
  • Typically combined with carbon or softener systems

Whole-House Carbon Filters

Best for: bad taste, chlorine, or general odor and clarity issues.

Polishes the water and improves taste, removing chlorine, VOCs, and many other chemicals. Great paired with other systems.

  • Improves taste, odor, and clarity
  • Removes chlorine, VOCs, and some pesticides
  • Available as automatic backwashing or cartridge style
  • Often used as a polishing filter alongside other systems
  • Low maintenance and great for general household use

Reverse Osmosis (RO) Systems

Best for: the cleanest drinking and cooking water – removes lead, nitrates, sodium, arsenic.

Removes up to 99% of dissolved solids. Available under-sink or whole-house.

  • Removes up to 99% of dissolved solids
  • Filters out lead, arsenic, nitrates, sodium, and more
  • Ideal for drinking water and cooking
  • Compact under-sink or larger whole-home options
  • Multi-stage filtration with membrane, carbon, and sediment stages

Cartridge Filter Systems

Best for: mild sediment, grit, or rust – and as a pre-filter to protect bigger systems.

Budget-friendly systems for sediment, chlorine, and particulates. Easy to maintain.

  • Simple and affordable for sediment or chlorine reduction
  • Uses replaceable filters – standard or oversized housing
  • Great as a pre-filter to protect larger treatment systems
  • Helps with cloudy water, rust particles, or grit
  • Easy homeowner maintenance and filter replacement

Professional Installation and Custom Configuration

We don’t install cookie-cutter systems. Every well is different, and so is every home.
That’s why we always start with:

  • On-site water testing
  • System sizing based on household use
  • Expert configuration for your specific problem

We use only professional-grade valves, bypasses, and plumbing connections —
not the plastic parts sold in big-box DIY kits.
And our systems are installed to be serviceable, upgradable, and built to last.

Already have a filtration system?

We offer service, repairs, and upgrades for most major brands — including Clack, Fleck, Pentair, Charger Water, and more. If your water still doesn’t taste right, let us evaluate and fix it.

Water Filtration – Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know which filtration system I need?

It starts with a water test. Different problems need different systems, so we test first, find the real issue, and design around your results. Iron stains call for an iron filter, hard water needs a softener, acidic water needs a neutralizer, and bacteria needs UV. Many homes need a combination, which is why we never sell one-size-fits-all packages.

What’s the difference between a water softener and a filter?

A softener removes the hardness minerals (calcium and magnesium) that cause scale and soap scum. A filter removes contaminants like iron, sediment, chlorine, or bacteria. They solve different problems, so many homes need both in a multi-stage system that handles softening and filtration together.

Can you test for PFAS and bacteria?

Yes. We perform in-house testing for common minerals like iron, pH, hardness, and sulfur. For PFAS, PFOAS, bacteria, nitrates, and other contaminants that require certified analysis, we collect samples and submit them to a NYS-certified lab, then build a system around the results to make your water safe.

Do I still need reverse osmosis if I have a whole-house filter?

Often yes. A whole-house system protects your plumbing and improves water throughout the home, but reverse osmosis at the kitchen tap gives you the cleanest possible drinking and cooking water by removing dissolved solids like lead, nitrates, and sodium. Many homeowners pair the two.

Will a filtration system work with my well pump and tank?

Yes. We design every system to integrate cleanly with your existing well pump and pressure tank, including the plumbing, electrical, and bypass work. Proper filtration also protects your pump and tank by reducing the sediment and buildup that wear them out.
