Pump Removal Methods: Ensuring Precision and Efficiency

At Kappus Pumps and Plumbing, we employ a range of meticulous methods to remove well pumps, tailored to the depth of the well, access to the wellhead, and the type of piping used. Each method is designed for optimum efficiency and precision, ensuring a smooth and successful pump removal process.

1. Hand Method:

Suitable for: Shallow wells less than 60’ deep installed with continuous polyethylene pipe.

Description: Our technicians carefully pull out the well pipe hand over hand until the pump is successfully removed, a technique ideal for shallow wells.

2. Foot Jack Method:

Suitable for: Rarely used today but historically popular.

Description: A pipe vise known as a foot jack is placed on the wellhead. As the well pipe is manually lifted, the foot jack secures the pipe in place, allowing gradual lifting of the pump.

3. Roller Method:

Suitable for: Deeper wells (60’ to 300’) with polyethylene well pipe.

Description: Utilizing a tool with rollers attached to the wellhead, our team gently pulls and guides the well pipe until the pump is removed. Ideal for wells where motorized pump removal options are challenging.

4. Motorized Well Pump Puller (Up-Z-Daisy):

Suitable for: Versatile application for wells up to 400’ deep with various pipe types.

Description: We utilize a specialized motorized well pump puller called the Up-Z-Daisy, meticulously designed to lift and remove the well pipe, allowing the pipes to be detached in a systematic manner until the well pump is removed. At Kappus Pumps & Plumbing “The Pump Man” we have modified our Up-Z-Daisy’s to handle well pump depths exceeding 700’

5. Pump Hoist Service Truck:

Suitable for: Pumps set on 20’ sections of PVC or steel pipe in wells ranging from 20 to well over 1000’ deep.

Description: A crane-like pump hoist service truck is positioned at the wellhead. The crane carefully lifts the well pipe and a foot jack secures each section of pipe in place, enabling systematic removal until the pump is successfully extracted. Each method we employ is a testament to our commitment to excellence, ensuring the safe and precise removal of well pumps based on unique requirements and challenges.
